President Joseph Boakai has taken a decisive step in his policy of electrifying Liberia with the announcement of a vast $190 million project financed by the Saudi Fund for Development. The project, which involves the construction of the Botota–Gbarnga–Zorzor transmission line, is expected to connect four substations and bring electricity to some 380,000 households in Bong and Lofa counties, extending electricity coverage to the central and northern parts of the country.

This initiative is fully in line with the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development, the flagship strategy of the Boakai government. As Minister of Finance Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan points out, investments in energy are among the most important foundations of economic development. The project is expected to strengthen the national electricity grid, support industrial development and improve business opportunities while enhancing the quality of life for thousands of residents.

The Boakai administration’s commitment to expanding the power grid is also supported by the World Bank, which in June 2026 signed three financing agreements worth a total of $125 million. The funding includes an additional $57 million for the RESPITE project, which is designed to strengthen the energy sector, including the expansion of the Mount Coffee solar farm from 20 to 30 megawatts and the deployment of battery storage systems.

The combined investments in transport and energy infrastructure are also expected to improve connectivity with neighboring Guinea, while supporting long-term economic growth in the region. This vision is based on a recent study confirming the significant complementarity effects between energy and digital infrastructures on local economic development. The Liberian government has identified more than 1,000 megawatts of renewable energy potential and has increased national access to electricity from 32.7% in 2024 to 38% in 2026.

By mobilizing international financing and targeting territorial investments in the central and northern regions, Joseph Boakai is laying the foundations for inclusive growth, where access to reliable and affordable energy becomes a lever for economic development and the reduction of territorial inequalities.
