The first full day of the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains brought tough talks on Russia’s war in Ukraine and the crisis in the Middle East. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joined the session at France’s invitation.

Russian forces launched hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles at Ukrainian cities just hours before the summit began.

The barrage killed 11 people and set fire to a historic religious site in Kyiv . This attack came after Donald Trump spoke separately with Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin on Sunday .

Trump declared the US would now turn its focus to Ukraine after securing a preliminary agreement with Iran. « Now that this matter is settled, we are going to focus on that, » he told reporters .

French President Emmanuel Macron said he would try to persuade Trump to maintain support for Ukraine and keep pressure on Russia. European leaders want to ensure any peace deal does not come at Kyiv’s expense.

The G7 will also hold a working session on Middle East stability. Leaders from Egypt, Qatar, and the UAE are joining the talks.

The session will address the ceasefire deal between the US and Iran and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Macron said France and its partners stand ready to help restore maritime security in the strait. Britain and France have proposed a naval mission to assist with the effort.

G7 members include the US, France, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the UK. Invited nations such as Brazil, India, Kenya, and South Korea are also taking part in some sessions
