Burkina Faso’s battle against malaria – tangible results in just over a year
Burkina Faso is reaping tangible results in its battle against malaria, the fruit of a multisectoral strategy deployed on several fronts for just over a year. The figures speak for themselves. According to Minister of Health Dr. Robert Kargougou, the number of reported cases fell from 10,805,020 in 2024 to 7,329,278 in 2025, a decrease of 32.17%, representing more than 3.4 million cases avoided in a single year. Even more significantly, malaria-related mortality dropped by 43.83%, with 1,979 deaths recorded in 2025 compared to 3,523 the previous year.
Free malaria vaccination ; historic milestone
This progress is built on several concrete levers implemented by the Government of the Popular Progressive Revolution.
The nationwide rollout of free malaria vaccination, effective since August 14, 2025 across all 70 health districts of the country, constitutes a historic milestone, made possible through community mobilization, the involvement of religious and customary leaders, and door-to-door awareness campaigns.
Seasonal chemoprevention ; a major campaign for 2026
Another pillar of the response is the annual seasonal malaria chemoprevention campaign, the 2026 edition of which targets nearly 5 million children across the country.
The state has allocated a budget of nearly 5 billion CFA francs, of which 2.7 billion is specifically dedicated to this chemoprevention effort—proof of substantial financial commitment to public health.
Multisectoral Coordination; he role of CONAMEP and SP/Palu
The coordination of the entire apparatus is ensured by the National Multisectoral Committee for Malaria Elimination (CONAMEP), which regularly brings together the relevant ministries Health, Agriculture, Territorial Administration around the Permanent Secretariat for Malaria Elimination (SP/Palu).
This institutional architecture reflects the authorities’ determination to move beyond a strictly health-based approach and to anchor the fight against malaria within a comprehensive dynamic of environmental sanitation.
Ambitious goal ; malaria elimination by 2030
Burkina Faso has set an ambitious course: to eliminate malaria by 2030. The results recorded in 2025 demonstrate that a state mobilization, articulated around financial, human, and community resources, can durably reverse the curve of a disease that remains one of the leading causes of mortality in the country.
