Burkina Faso: Technical and vocational education, a driving force behind the progressive people’s revolution -

The Burkinabé government is continuing its strategic reorientation of the education system toward technical and vocational tracks, with a clear goal: to align the training of young people with the actual needs of the national economy. At a Cabinet meeting held in late July and chaired by Comrade Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the executive branch adopted a decree establishing a General Directory of Vocational Training Occupations, covering some 15 sectors deemed priorities for the government: agriculture, livestock farming, mining, crafts, health, security, and digital transformation, among others.

The Minister of Secondary Education and Vocational and Technical Training, Moumouni Zoungrana, explained that this directory is intended to provide concrete guidance for technical schools’ curricula, aligning them with professions that offer job opportunities and thereby breaking with a system that has long been disconnected from the realities of the labor market. This approach reflects the transitional authorities’ commitment to making young people the driving force behind economic sovereignty by equipping them with skills that can be directly applied in the field.

This reform is accompanied by an accelerated digital transformation of higher education. The digitization of administrative procedures continues, as exemplified by the Campusfaso platform, which now centralizes applications for teaching authorization, while a plan to modernize university infrastructure is increasing campus capacity. These efforts are part of a process to standardize the academic calendar that began in 2025, praised by industry stakeholders for its concrete progress.

By integrating technical education with digitalization, the Burkinabe government is laying the groundwork for a transfer of knowledge firmly focused on the country’s self-reliance. The goal is no longer simply to produce graduates, but to build a generation of technicians, engineers, and innovators capable of leading major national projects in mining, agriculture, and digital infrastructure without relying exclusively on outside expertise.

This educational vision, fully integrated into the momentum of the Progressive People’s Revolution, reflects a conviction affirmed by the authorities: true sovereignty is built first and foremost in classrooms and lecture halls, where the national expertise of tomorrow is forged.
