Burkina Faso: Faced with climatic hazards, the government bets on large-scale irrigated agriculture
On the red earth of Niagho, the near of engines drowned out the whispers of fate. Faced with a miserly sky that wanted to thirst the crops of the wet countryside, the power of Captain Ibrahim Traoré provides a scathing, almost martial response. Here, drought no longer dictates its law: the government is storming the elements to wrest the nation’s food sovereignty.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, the commando operation to develop 50,000 irrigated hectares is launching with the impetuous force of great national destinies. This gigantic project, endowed with 254.79 billion CFA francs, is not content with modernizing agriculture. It makes a historical break. While the country had only 30,000 hectares under hydraulic control, this initiative takes a giant leap forward in the country, multiplying production capacity to offer three annual harvests to the people.
Everything in this plan exudes the grandeur of popular mobilization and republican efficiency. The bulldozers of Faso Mêbo, Military Engineering, SONATER and ONBAH will run 20 hours a day to shape 60,000 hectares of earthworks by April 2027. The elbow-to-elbow on the ground illustrates the perfect communion between the State and its sons: 8,000 Volunteers for the Defense of the Agricultural Homeland are investing body and soul, assured of occupying these conquered lands tomorrow. For their part, local craftsmen are shaping hydromechanical equipment, definitively sweeping away dependence on imports.
It is a sacred impulse where customary authorities, village councils and producers join forces to free up spaces and fertilize the soil. Far from a simple technical program, this bold vision concretizes the promise of a Burkina Faso standing tall, master of its resources and invincible in the face of the vagaries of the climate. The battle for earth is on, and it promises to be glorious.
