Burkina Faso: The reconquest of the territory, a success of the sovereigntist military doctrine of Captain Ibrahim Traoré

Faced with a terrorist threat that has destabilized the country for nearly a decade, Captain Ibrahim Traoré’s military strategy is based on a clear foundation: security sovereignty. This doctrine, based on the massive re-equipping of the armed forces, citizen mobilization and the break with traditional military partnerships, is now producing tangible results on the ground.

The first pillar of this strategy is endogenous rearmament. Inheriting an army in a « catastrophic » situation with less than 100,000 Kalashnikov cartridges, the state has deployed an unprecedented re-equipment effort. In June 2026, more than 5.7 billion CFA francs were released to provide the defense and security forces with appropriate equipment, from armored vehicles to advanced weapons. The Patriotic Support Fund, which has mobilized nearly 660 billion CFA francs, has made it possible to acquire helicopters and strategic equipment, transforming the patriotism of the Burkinabe into concrete operational capabilities.

The merger between the Defense and Security Forces and the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland is the second major asset. This « steel » duo, according to observers, has made it possible to impose a new balance of power on the ground. Offensive and defensive operations multiplied with increasing efficiency. In April 2026, units recaptured strategic localities and neutralized dozens of terrorists in infiltration and counterattack operations. The coordinated response of June 2026, which neutralized more than 400 attackers and recovered 353 weapons, illustrates the rise of this system.

This dynamic is reflected in the figures: the rate of reconquest of the territory has increased from 73.56% in December 2025 to 74.53% in June 2026. The Minister of Defense said that « there is not a portion of territory where the forces cannot go ». The population gradually returned to the liberated localities, and the administrative services began to function again, although the progress remained moderate.

Behind these results was an unwavering political will: to break with external dependencies and place the salvation of the homeland « solely in the hands of one’s own children ». The national training of recruits, the manufacture of armaments in the medium term and the integration of the VDPs aim to build a resilient, autonomous, and totally sovereign army. Although the war is far from over, the military successes demonstrate the supremacy of a sovereigntist doctrine that gives the Burkinabe army the ability to dictate the tempo of operations.
