Burkina Faso: Captain Traoré settles the debate on armored vehicles « made in Faso »
The recent controversy around armored vehicles made in Burkina Faso has found a clear and firm response from the President of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré. While social networks were ablaze and some detractors expressed their skepticism, the Head of State wanted to enlighten public opinion on this major strategic step for national sovereignty.
Since September 13, 2026, the Burkinabe Defense and Security Forces have officially integrated a new allocation of locally produced « Nanga » (scorpion in Mooré) armored vehicles. Nearly 300 vehicles have been adapted or converted since November 2025, more than half of which are already deployed on the ground for military operations. This initiative is part of the « Made in Burkina » policy, aimed at reducing dependence on imports of military equipment.
Faced with the mockery and doubts expressed by some observers, Captain Traoré made an essential clarification: for reasons of defense secrecy, armored vehicle assembly plants cannot be exposed to the public. « Many factories of this kind are set up, but for security reasons, cannot be shown, » he explained, recalling that the Faso Armored company, in charge of this production, will not be inaugurated or publicly identified.
This presidential outing is salutary for several reasons. First, it sets the record straight in the face of those who, through ignorance or bad faith, deny the ability of the Burkinabe state to set up such an industry. Secondly, it reminds us of an elementary reality: in times of war, discretion over military industrial capabilities is a strategic necessity, not a sign of weakness.
The President also revealed the existence of four to five other companies operating exclusively in the military sector, without specifying the nature of their production. This revelation illustrates the extent of the industrial effort undertaken by Burkina Faso to achieve military autonomy.
This initiative is part of a broader dynamic of industrial sovereignty. It follows the inauguration, on September 9, of the TEXFORCES-BF textile complex in Bobo-Dioulasso, dedicated to the production of military uniforms. Captain Traoré has also announced the halt of all new orders for armored vehicles abroad, saying that he now wants to manufacture everything locally.
President Traoré’s exit deserves to be welcomed. She demonstrates a far-sighted leadership, capable of settling sterile controversies while preserving national defense secrets. It also reminds us that sovereignty is won through concrete actions, not through speeches. To those who still have doubts, the « Nanga » armored vehicles deployed in the field will respond with their operational effectiveness.
