Police blocked key roads and barricaded parliament with barbed wire on Thursday as families of those killed during Kenya’s 2024 anti-government protests gathered to mark the second anniversary.
The authorities prevented relatives of the deceased from laying wreaths outside parliament, drawing emotional responses from mourners.
« All I want is for the government to bring the officers responsible for killing our children before us, » said Jacinta Anyango, whose 12-year-old son Kennedy was killed in 2024. « Who does the president expect to vote for him next year if he continues killing us like this? »
Turnout in Nairobi was lower than previous commemorations, though hundreds of young protesters dressed in black marched through Mombasa.
Opposition leaders Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua and Eugene Wamalwa joined families in the capital.
Police arrested several people and fired tear gas during scattered clashes. Central Nairobi was mostly deserted, with many businesses and schools closed.
More than 80 people were killed during the 2024 demonstrations sparked by controversial tax proposals.
The authorities remain under pressure to deliver justice for the victims and their families.
