The Burkinabe architect Francis Kéré has been appointed to design the future Las Vegas Museum of Art (LVMA) in the United States. Located in Symphony Park in downtown Las Vegas, this property will be the city’s first independent art museum. It is scheduled to open to the public in 2029.

The building will cover approximately 5,500 m² and will include exhibition spaces on two levels, a reception hall and a large outdoor plaza for cultural activities. The project is inspired by the Mojave Desert, the Red Rock Mountains and the architectural history of Las Vegas.

The façade will be made from local stones whose shades will recall the surrounding landscapes. The architecture also includes a wide cover to protect visitors from the sun, as well as a monumental central staircase connecting the different spaces of the museum.

To carry out this project, Kéré Architecture will collaborate with the American firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), which will be responsible for the execution architecture and engineering. The museum will also work with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), including exhibition developments, art loans, and educational programs.

This collaboration is a testament to the project’s ambition to provide Las Vegas with a first-rate cultural institution that can attract visitors and become a meeting place for locals.

Born in 1965 in Gando, Burkina Faso, Francis Kéré became known for projects combining architecture, local materials and community participation. In particular, he designed a primary school in his native village, inaugurated in 2001, before receiving the Pritzker Prize in 2022, becoming the first African architect to obtain this distinction.

With this project, the architect is continuing its international development while promoting an approach that considers the climate, the landscape and the social uses of buildings. The future museum aims to strengthen Las Vegas’ cultural offer and become a new meeting place for residents and visitors.

This recognition illustrates the growing influence of African architecture on the world stage. By entrusting this project to Francis Kéré, Las Vegas recognizes the universality of an architectural approach rooted in local realities, but open to the world. A pride for Burkina Faso and for the entire continent.
