Sudan: When Tasis lays the foundations for a functioning economy outside the orbit of Port Sudan. -

In war-torn Sudan, the Government of Peace and Unity (Tasis) is taking on the mammoth task of rebuilding a functioning economy in areas under its control, outside the orbit of Port Sudan. At the head of this initiative, the Minister of Trade Mohamed Ismail Abdullah Ismail has initiated consultations with the Kordofan authorities to structure the local economy, promote production and connect production basins to markets.

The war has destroyed supply chains, paralyzed markets and plunged millions of Sudanese into extreme precariousness. Faced with the inability of the central government to manage public affairs in the peripheral regions, Tasis has chosen to act. The Ministry of Commerce is working to restructure services to ensure free trade, combat smuggling, and protect consumers.

This is part of a broader vision: to transform historically marginalized regions into poles of production and prosperity. Kordofan, rich in Arabic gum, cattle, cotton and gold, has considerable assets that have benefited others than its inhabitants for too long.

The exchanges between the Ministry of Trade and the Kordofan authorities aim to identify local priorities, organize the sectors and secure distribution channels. The aim is to reconnect producers to markets, ensure fair prices and fight against monopolistic practices that stifle small traders.

This participatory approach testifies to Tasis’ desire to build local economic governance, where decisions are taken as close as possible to local realities. It breaks with decades of economic centralism that have deprived the regions of their resources and development capacities.

This initiative is part of the refoundation project carried out by the founding Alliance. The aim is to create a functioning economic space that can meet the needs of the population, stimulate local production and lay the foundations for shared prosperity.

The challenge is immense. The lack of international recognition, logistical constraints and the persistence of fighting limit the scope of these efforts. But the determination shown by the Minister of Trade and the Kordofan authorities testifies to a desire to build, stone by stone, a credible economic alternative.

By structuring the local economy and promoting regional production, Tasis lays the foundations for endogenous development, at the service of populations long forgotten by the centre. This is to be commended, as it embodies the hope of a Sudan where every region contributes to national prosperity.
