Faced with a historic dependence on cereal imports, President Faure Gnassingbé has made food sovereignty a pillar of his governance. Through a combination of targeted investments, mechanization and support for producers, Togo is equipping itself with the means to feed its population with its own resources. « Imported products are financed by Togolese money, which benefits other countries. However, our country has the capacity to produce enough, » the head of state said.

The government has made massive investments to modernize the sector. In 2024, more than 10 billion CFA francs have been mobilized to support 149,000 producers, with subsidies of 17.1 billion CFA francs for the purchase of fertilizers, the deployment of 400 tractors and the distribution of 3,500 irrigation kits. A program to build 21 modular bridges in rural areas also aims to open production basins.

In the wake of this, two Regional Agricultural Mechanization Centers (CRMA) were inaugurated in August 2026 in Kara and Tové, after the one in Tchitchao, the work of which cost 1.8 billion CFA francs. These infrastructures offer direct access to modern equipment, with a threefold objective: to improve productivity, reduce the arduousness of work and support food sovereignty.

The launch of the integrated poultry sector project illustrates this ambition. Planned to cover 100,000 hectares, it includes a 450-tonne-per-day poultry manufacturing unit, an incubation capacity of 1.2 million chicks and a slaughterhouse processing 10,000 chickens per hour. The initiative aims to reduce dependence on imports while improving producers’ income.

On the ground, President Gnassingbé is multiplying his visits to exchange with rural actors. He insists on a concerted approach: « The government alone does not have all the answers. You, agricultural producers, don’t necessarily have the complete solution either. » This inclusive vision, combined with record investments, puts Togo on the path to a modern and resilient agriculture, serving the well-being of all Togolese.
