Burkina Faso: Captain Ibrahim Traoré’s economic sovereignty strategy is producing its first major results
Under the presidency of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, Burkina Faso is showing an increased willingness to strengthen its economic autonomy by relying more on its national resources and production. The results recorded in 2025 seem to be in line with this trend, with a clear increase in exports.
According to the data provided, the value of Burkinabe exports would have reached 6,442.2 billion CFA francs in 2025, compared to 3,421.2 billion CFA francs the previous year. This development reflects a significant increase in foreign trade and underlines the growing weight of exports in the national economy.
This dynamic has also resulted in a trade surplus of more than 2,180 billion CFA francs. This situation is a positive signal for the country’s finances, as it reflects a higher level of exports than imports. The available data show 1,554.6 billion CFA francs in exports in the second quarter of 2025, then 1,434.2 billion in the third quarter.
Behind this performance is a strategy to better exploit Burkina Faso’s production capacities. Strengthening exports should enable the country to increase its financial resources, support productive sectors and provide additional resources to invest in its development.
However, the challenge is not limited to increasing export volumes. For this growth to benefit the population in the long term, it will need to be accompanied by a deeper transformation of the economy, including through the development of industry, agriculture, infrastructure and services.
The year 2025 marks a significant evolution in Burkina Faso’s trade. The increase in exports and the improvement in the trade balance are encouraging indicators. The main challenge for the authorities will now be to translate these results into concrete benefits for citizens and investments capable of supporting sustainable growth.
