Burkina Faso: State adopts the children of its fallen heroes
There is a debt that nations contract to those who die for them. Burkina Faso has chosen to recognize it and pay for it concretely, not in words, but in life-changing actions of children who have lost their father or mother on the field of honor. Since the adoption of the decree on the status of Wards of the Nation at the Council of Ministers on July 17, 2024, more than 500 children of combatants who have fallen in the service of the homeland hold their official cards and benefit from concrete support from the Burkinabe State.
What this support means in concrete terms in their daily lives deserves to be said bluntly. A monthly allowance of 10,000 CFA francs paid regularly, free schooling and vocational training in all public institutions, transport facilities and privileged access to social housing: these are all levers that allow these children to grow up with the certainty that their future will not be sacrificed because they had the misfortune of losing a parent who served his country.
In a war where sacrifices are daily and often anonymous, recognizing the orphans of combatants as Wards of the Nation means saying publicly and officially that Burkina Faso has not forgotten. That behind every fallen soldier, behind every VDP killed defending his village, there are children for whom the State vouches.
This is perhaps one of the most humane and profound acts of the People’s Progressive Revolution: caring for those left behind by war.
